Collaboration for Enhancement of Mathematics Instruction (CEMI) is a partnership involving all middle and high school mathematics teachers of Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC), Indiana University Department of Mathematics, and Indiana University School of Education (SOE).

Motivated by a recognition that we could all do better if we worked together, university mathematics education faculty members, mathematics faculty members and MCCSC mathematics teachers and administrators were engaged in discussions of how the three entities might collaborate to improve mathematics teaching and learning in both institutions under the guidance of Japanese Lesson Study. The followings were set as the primary goals of this project:

  • All members of the partnership develop richer and deeper understandings of mathematics teaching and learning;
  • The classroom practices of the participants reflect these new understandings; and
  • A culture of continual professional development and instructional renewal begins to develop.
