Owen Valley Middle School, H.L. Harshman Middle School, and Tell City Jr. High are sharing Ben Mikaelsen as an "Artist in Residence" for the school year. They will begin with a four-way discussion on Oct. 13 of the ways that he conducts research. He will also take some time to describe the new project that he will be starting the following week. During the two or so months he is on the ocean doing research, he will keep in contact with the schools via the internet. During that time students will be doing their own research projects, too. Classes will also be reading copies of Ben's books throughout the winter. All schools were provided with 15 paperback copies of his books through the Dept. of Ed. grant. Book discussions will be scheduled with Ben in the spring. Some of the discussions will involve different groups of students and different grades. Money has also been budgeted for side-trips to go along with the books if it works out to do so. (e.g. Johnson Space center to go along with the book "Countdown.") All costs are taken care of by the grant that OVMS received.

The Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation received a grant from the Corporation for Educational Communications in 1997 to participate in a pilot program in distance education. Through the efforts of the C4 (vocational education) department, Mike Hackman at Columbus North and Matt Hankins at Columbus East participate in a joint team teaching concept in the marketing education program. Three days each week the two schools connect to each other sharing information, guest speakers, and job experiences in marketing. The facilities have been used at both high schools for joint department meetings, team leader meetings, and principal cabinet meetings. We have held workshops on discipline training in the classroom.
Activities have been offered for the math, science, foreign language, business, social studies, and the fine arts departments. Guest speakers have included Gov. Frank O'Bannon and Rep. Lee Hamilton who have talked to our students and answered questions by our students. In the second year of the pilot program, we hope to expand our offerings to even more classes. We would like to see Hauser High School, also in Bartholomew County, receive a Distance Learning lab so that their students can take even more advantage of course offerings. One goal in the third year will be to offer  electronic field trips so that students can stay in the local school while a remote camera crew can go to the businesses to interview guest speakers and take tours of facilities that may be restricted due to safety concerns or size of students in classes. For more information about the distance education program, please call Meredith Thompson, C4 Area Director at 812-376-4240. Mike Hackman
