Design Playshop: Design, Play, Technology and Collaboration in Preschool Classrooms
In the Design Playshop, we developed a curricular model that deepens learning through making and integrates design, play, collaboration, and technology in early childhood classrooms.
In 2013, Wohlwend and Peppler partnered with preschool teachers to explore and design the Design Playshop model using Squishy Circuits, a toolkit of creating electronic circuits using playdough as conductive material. Since that time, the research team has analyzed video data of children’s playful making to understand how the model supports sustained engagement, conceptual exploration, and elaborated projects. Ongoing research on the Design Playshop model examines material mediators and their role in the contextual learning of participants.
